On the night of December 4, 1966, Nemo and Airman Throneburg were conducting a routine patrol near an airbase in Vietnam.
The area was dark and surrounded by thick vegetation. Visibility was limited, making it difficult to detect anyone hiding nearby.
As they moved through the jungle, Nemo suddenly stopped.
His body became rigid. His ears stood upright. He emitted a low growl.
Years of training had taught Throneburg to trust Nemo's instincts. Something was wrong.
Moments later, the silence was shattered.
Four Viet Cong soldiers opened fire from concealed positions in the bushes.
The attack was sudden and devastating.
A bullet struck Airman Throneburg in the shoulder, causing him to fall to the ground. At nearly the same moment, Nemo was hit by a bullet that entered near his eye and passed through his skull.
The injury was catastrophic.
Most animals would have collapsed immediately.
Nemo did not.
Despite suffering a severe head wound and losing one eye, Nemo continued to fight.
Instead of retreating or succumbing to his injuries, he charged directly toward the attackers.
The wounded German Shepherd launched himself at the enemy soldiers, biting and attacking with remarkable determination. His actions created confusion and disruption, forcing the attackers to focus on him rather than his injured handler.
Most importantly, Nemo's bravery bought precious time.
While Nemo engaged the enemy, Throneburg was able to reach his radio and call for assistance.
Reinforcements quickly responded to the distress call.
Faced with incoming backup and the relentless resistance of the wounded military dog, the attackers fled the area.
Nemo had done exactly what he was trained to do: protect his handler.
But what made his actions extraordinary was that he continued fighting despite injuries that could have easily ended his life.
After the attack, both Throneburg and Nemo were rushed for medical treatment.
The extent of Nemo's injuries shocked military veterinarians. The bullet wound had destroyed one of his eyes and caused significant damage to his head.
Yet somehow, he survived.
Through intensive medical care and a lengthy recovery process, Nemo gradually regained strength. Although he permanently lost one eye, he adapted remarkably well and continued to display the resilience that had defined him on the battlefield.
His survival became a symbol of determination and courage for everyone who heard his story.
Following his recovery, Nemo's combat service came to an end. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was retired from active duty and returned to the United States.
There, he became an ambassador for military working dogs, helping raise awareness about the critical role these animals play in protecting service members.
For many people, Nemo changed the perception of military dogs. He demonstrated that they were not simply tools of war but loyal partners willing to risk everything for the humans they served alongside.
Nemo lived for another six years after the attack, enjoying a well-earned retirement.
Nemo's actions have never been forgotten.
