Green the Wolf: The Story of a Wolf Who Never Forgot the Woman Who Saved Him

Some animal stories make you smile.

Others stay with you long after you finish reading them.

The story of Green the wolf belongs to the second kind.

In 2010, Chinese wildlife artist Li Weiyi came across a tiny wolf cub on the Ruoergai grasslands in Sichuan, China. The cub was only days old and had been left orphaned after his parents were killed by humans.

He was weak, frightened and barely clinging to life.

Li could have walked away.

Instead, she picked him up.

She named him Green.

What followed was a remarkable journey of rescue, separation, survival and a bond that appeared to survive years apart.

It became the story behind the documentary Return to the Wolves, and decades later, the story of Green and Li Weiyi continues to move people around the world.

The Tiny Wolf Who Had No One Left

Li Weiyi was visiting the Ruoergai grasslands in April 2010 when she learned about a wolf family that had been destroyed.

According to reports from China Daily, the adult wolves had died after becoming caught up in human activity, leaving several very young cubs behind. Li discovered the only surviving cub and realized that he was unlikely to survive without help.

He was tiny.

He was vulnerable.

And he had no mother to return to.

Li brought him back to Chengdu and named him Green.

The little wolf quickly became part of her life.

She fed him, cared for him and watched him grow. Green became deeply attached to Li, and she began to think of him almost like a son.

But there was one problem.

Green was a wolf.

And no matter how much he loved the person who had saved him, a city apartment could never truly be his home.

When Love Meant Letting Him Go

This was perhaps the hardest decision Li Weiyi ever had to make.

She loved Green.

But loving him meant understanding what he needed, not simply keeping him close.

Green needed space.

He needed to learn how to survive.

Most importantly, he needed to become a wolf.

So Li made the painful decision to return him to the grasslands.

It was not as simple as opening a door and letting him run free.

Green had grown up around humans and had never learned everything a wild wolf needed to know. Li and filmmaker Yi Feng spent months helping him transition back toward a life in the wilderness. Green was gradually exposed to other animals and taught survival skills that would help him adapt.

The process was difficult.

But eventually, the moment Li had been dreading arrived.

Green had to leave.

And this time, she could not follow him.

Li had rescued him because he needed her.

Now she had to let him go because he needed freedom.

That is perhaps the most painful kind of love.

The kind that knows when to release.

Green Returned to the Wild

Green eventually returned to the Ruoergai grasslands.

Li had no way of knowing exactly what would happen next.

Would he survive?

Would he remember her?

Would he ever see her again?

Those questions stayed with her.

But Green's story did not end when he disappeared into the grasslands.

Years later, Li returned to the place where she had released him.

And the wolf she had raised was still part of her story.

Reports about their later encounters describe Green recognizing Li and maintaining a remarkable connection with the woman who had cared for him as a cub. The relationship became one of the central emotional elements of Return to the Wolves, the 2017 documentary that chronicled their journey.

A Wolf and His Human Mother

There is something incredibly powerful about the relationship between Li and Green.

Li never wanted Green to become a pet.

She wanted him to become a wolf.

That distinction matters.

She understood that rescuing a wild animal does not mean owning it. Sometimes the greatest act of love is giving an animal the opportunity to return to the life it was born to live.

Green's journey was not about turning a wolf into a domestic companion.

It was about giving a wild animal a second chance.

And that second chance eventually took him back to the wilderness.

The Story Became a Documentary

Li Weiyi documented her extraordinary experience with Green, and the story eventually became the documentary Return to the Wolves.

The film was released in China in 2017 and follows Li's attempt to raise an orphaned wolf and eventually return him to the wild.

The documentary gave audiences an intimate look at the difficult relationship between humans and wildlife.

It showed something that is often forgotten when people talk about rescuing wild animals.

Saving an animal does not always mean keeping it.

Sometimes, saving it means preparing it to live without you.

Why Green's Story Still Touches People

There are plenty of stories about people rescuing animals.

But Green's story is different.

Li did not simply rescue a helpless animal and keep him forever.

She rescued him, raised him, taught him and eventually gave him back the freedom he was born to have.

That required sacrifice.

It required patience.

And most of all, it required putting Green's needs above her own emotions.

That is what makes the story so powerful.

She wanted Green close.

But she knew Green belonged in the wild.

A Story About Trust

The relationship between Green and Li also raises an interesting question.

Can wild animals remember the humans who helped them?

Animal memory and recognition are complex subjects, and we should be careful about assuming that every unusual animal behavior proves human like emotions.

But Green's story certainly shows how powerful long term relationships between humans and animals can become.

Li's experiences with Green became a major part of her life, and her work later expanded into wildlife conservation and wolf protection.

In 2020, a wolf ecological protection and monitoring station was established in Ruoergai with Li's involvement, extending her connection with wolves beyond her personal story with Green.

The little wolf she once rescued had changed the direction of her life.

Green's Story Is Bigger Than One Wolf

It would be easy to look at Green's story simply as a beautiful friendship between a woman and a wolf.

But there is something deeper here.

It is a story about wildlife.

It is a story about responsibility.

And it is a story about understanding that wild animals deserve the freedom to live according to their nature.

Green was not meant to live in an apartment forever.

He was not meant to become someone's pet.

He was born to run across the grasslands.

Li understood that.

And even though letting him go broke her heart, she did it anyway.

The Most Difficult Kind of Love

We often think love means keeping someone close.

Green's story teaches something different.

Sometimes love means stepping back.

Sometimes it means watching someone walk away even when every part of you wants to call them back.

And sometimes, the greatest gift you can give an animal is the freedom to become what it was always meant to be.

Li saved Green's life.

But she also gave him something else.

Freedom.

What Green the Wolf Taught the World

Green's story leaves us with a simple but powerful message.

Kindness can change a life.

A tiny wolf cub that might never have survived was given a chance because one person stopped and cared.

But Li's greatest act of kindness was not rescuing Green.

It was letting him go.

She understood that her love could not replace the wild.

It could only help him find his way back to it.

That is what makes the story of Green the wolf so unforgettable.

He was rescued by a human.

He was raised with love.

He learned to survive.

And eventually, he returned to the world where he belonged.

A Final Thought

There are some animals we rescue.

There are some animals who rescue something inside us.

Green was both.

He entered Li Weiyi's life as a helpless little wolf cub and became part of a journey that would last for years and eventually inspire a documentary and wider conservation work.

His story reminds us that animals are not ours to possess.

They are lives entrusted to us for a moment.

And sometimes, the most beautiful thing we can do for them is give them the chance to walk away.

Green disappeared into the grasslands.

But his story never disappeared.

It continues to remind us that compassion can cross the boundary between human and wild, and that the kindness we give to an animal can leave a mark far beyond the moment we first meet.

At BuddyPaws, we believe every animal has a story worth knowing.

Every rescue matters.

Every connection matters.

And every life deserves to be seen, respected and loved.

Because sometimes, one small act of kindness can change an entire life.

And sometimes, that life changes yours too.
